Additional Notes

Arundel, Sir John (b. 1550 – d. ?):; John Arundel was captain of one of the smaller vessels on Raleigh’s 1585 Roanoke Expedition under Richard Grenville. Once in the New World, Arundel took part in explorations of the mainland with Manteo, and was sent back to England in August to inform Raleigh and Queen Elizabeth of the safe arrival of the colonists, to urge the prompt dispatch of supply ships, and likely to inform Raleigh that Grenville would in all probability not be staying long in Roanoke as it had proven an inadequate base of operations for privateering expeditions. After delivering his message to Elizabeth, John Arundel was knighted.;
